What is PRODBIM? (GEN – 875.00)

GEN – 875.00. Two weeks ago, many members may have received an email concerning the planned deployment of a BIM product database for the HVACR sector called PRODBIM. As our Team has received questions, this article aims to provide answers, supporting you in better understanding this initiative.

What is Eurovent Services Company?

Eurovent Services Company (hereinafter: ESC) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Eurovent Association and registered as a profit company in Brussels with a subsidiary in Paris. The company is being used to manage independently financed projects such as the ‘Eurovent Summit’, ‘Issue Groups’ or ‘Special Projects’ – in which many members are participating. It has recently also been used to initiate two new projects as services for our sector – one of them being PRODBIM.

ESC has its own Board of Directors, which is being elected by the General Assembly of the Eurovent Association, i.e. the member associations of Eurovent, for a duration of two years. The ESC Board consists of manufacturer representatives.

After the project launch, PRODBIM was moved into a separate limited company, of which ESC is the main shareholder.

What is PRODBIM?

As many formats of products coexist within BIM today, many manufacturers within the HVACR industry see a need for a harmonised, European library to ensure that the end-user receives the correct, accurate, and updated product data. This is where PRODBIM comes into play.

PRODBIM will deliver a dedicated online database, which will present product data of manufacturers within a standardised framework useable for BIM environments, as well as the frequently used database systems and building codes throughout different countries. It acts as a bridge between your Product Information Management (PIM) and BIM.

As outlined in the following diagram, the PRODBIM database adapts to different national building codes and systems, allowing manufacturers to avoid having to manage a multitude of (national) databases.

PRODBIM is inviting manufacturers to join Launching Committees by products, to deliver a harmonized database of BIM objects and product templates according to the ISO IFC standard and CEN, as well as formats for BIM software and regulations.

Who controls my data?

The data uploaded to the PRODBIM database for publication is fully owned and controlled by the manufacturer.

Example: A manufacturer can decide to provide data for different BIM levels (e.g. only Level 1 and 2, as described at the bottom of this article), regional databases, or future European Union European Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL).

Is there a relation with Eurovent Certified Performance?

Participants do not need to be ‘Eurovent Certified’ to join the PRODBIM database. It is open to all manufacturers.

Yet, a lot of performance data generated through the ‘Eurovent Certified Performance’ programmes are also of relevance for BIM projects and software.

Accordingly, the publically available data of ‘Eurovent Certified Performance’ will be published on the future PRODBIM database, offering an additional added value for certification participants. Manufacturers thus do not have to enter any kind of data again that is already available.

The data deriving from the ‘Eurovent Certified Performance’ database is certified. Accordingly, this data will also be highlighted as ‘certified’ in the PRODBIM database.

Who supports PRODBIM?

PRODBIM is being supported by knowledge partners such as REHVA (The Federation of European Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Associations representing a network of more than 100.000 engineers from 27 countries), CSTB (French Scientific and Technical Centre for Building), ISC GmbH (one of the leading providers of AHU selection software), and TIPEE (a sustainable construction platform).

How can I learn more?

Free-of-charge online information sessions are being held during the following dates:

  • 19 February 2018, 14:00h (Paris time)
  • 26 February 2018, 14:00h (Paris time)
  • 5 March 2018, 14:00h (Paris time)

To sign up, kindly contact:

How much does it cost?

Similar to a certification programme within the Eurovent Certification company, a Launching Committee is going to held to develop the specifications for different product groups.

To enter the Launching Committee, an entrance fee of 5.000 EUR will be charged. As of the second year, an annual subscription fee of 3.000 EUR applies.

If a manufacturer decides to join more than one Launching Committee, a reduction of 50% is given on each Product Committee after the first.

Good to know

What is BIM?

BIM (Building Information Modelling) is an intelligent 3D model-based collaborative process that provides MEP, architecture, engineering, and construction professionals the information, insight and tools to more efficiently plan, design, construct, and manage buildings and infrastructure.

The BIM concept envisages virtual construction of a facility prior to its actual physical construction. This reduces uncertainty, improves safety, works out problems, and simulates and analyses potential impacts.

Manufacturers of HVACR equipment find themselves increasingly confronted with BIM, and more and more projects demand the provision of BIM objects.

Why are there different levels of BIM?

There are currently four levels of BIM maturity under which Building Information Modelling can be classified. Fundamentally, the levels of BIM are a set of criteria which progresses from 0 to 3 depending on the national digital ecosystem, where distinct milestones are defined to move the construction industry into a full-fledged collaborative digital environment.

There are also several Dimensions of BIM data (4D for planning, 5D for cost, 6D for energy and 7D for maintenance and asset management) to cover the lifecycle of the building asset.

Presentation will be shown during the WebEx sessions and during the Committees, and soon on the PRODBIM website.
