Harmonised standards Machinery Directive (MD) (GEN – 1217.00)

GEN – 1217.00. The Machinery Directive describes the legal rules that a manufacturer must follow when building machines for the European market. From time to time, the list of the related harmonised standards is updated. The most recent update was on 3 March 2021.

Machinery Directive

The Annex I is the most important part of the Machinery Directive (MD). It specifies the essential health and safety requirements with which machinery must comply, e.g. mechanical hazards (clamping hazards, cutting hazards, etc.), radiological hazards, electrical hazards or requirements for control systems, emergency stops, detachable and/or movable guards.

The MD is one of the better known ‘CE’ directives that relies on self-certification. The MD lists only the essential requirements.

The technical specifications can be found in the harmonised standards. They apply to all products covered by the definition of ‘machinery’, the main criteria being ‘non-man-made moving parts’, unless there is a specific exception. The harmonised standards are published as a Commission Implementing Decision, the latest dates from 3 March 2021.

Summary of references of harmonised standards published in the Official Journal

The summary (GEN – 1217.01) consolidates the references of harmonised standards published by the Commission in the Official Journal of the European Union. It amounts to 184 pages.

The Commission services provide this summary for information purposes only. Although they take every possible precaution to ensure that the summary is updated regularly and is correct, errors may occur, and the summary may not be complete at a certain point in time. The summary does not as such generate legal effects.

Recommended actions

Manufacturers may find the summary of harmonised standards useful when considering updates or new production machinery. It may also prove useful when they put machinery on the European market.

While the overview of the harmonised standards is very extensive, most manufacturers would be aware of those that apply to them.
