GEN – 994.00. The EMC Directive applies to almost all equipment that contains electrical and/or electronic components. It states that the generation of electromagnetic disturbances of appliances must be limited to such level that other appliances can function in accordance with their intended use. At the end of January 2019, the Commission published the 2018 update of its Guide to the EMC Directive.

EMC Guide

The revised Guide contains 67 pages and can be downloaded in English, French and German from: https://ec.europa.eu/docsroom/documents/33601

Additional information

The European Commission provides quite detailed introductions and guides on its website regarding most Directives. These contain the legislation, guidance documents, reference to standards and European and national contact points.

The Commission website dealing with electrical and electronic engineering industries also provides guidance for the Low Voltage Directive and Radio Equipment Directive.

Recommended Actions

Manufacturers are recommended to consult the Commission websites when looking for initial information regarding Directives. Often these websites also provide FAQs that go into further detail.
