GEN – 947.00. The European Commission has released the 2018 pocketbook with data up to 2016. Whereas the first pocketbooks elaborated mainly on energy figures, the 2018 version also covers socio-economic indicators and the impact of the energy sector on the environment.

Contents

The pocketbook is 268 pages long; same size as in 2017. It starts with a global overview that is split into 8 regions: EU 28, Africa, America, Asia, China, Middle East, Russia and the rest of the world. It tracks the evolution between 1995 and 2016, followed by the energy and socio-economic indicators for Europe.

Of note is the fourth chapter which elaborates on the impact of the energy sector on the environment.

The figures, both energy and emission related, are very interesting, especially when considering the ongoing climate discussions.

There is alsoan energy profile for each EU country, as well as details of each country’s progress towards the EU’s 2020 climate and energy targets: https://ec.europa.eu/energy/en/topics/energy-strategy-and-energy-union/2020-energy-strategy

Of related and complementary interest are the Key World Energy Statistics by the International Energy Agency IEA. The IEA information provides introduction to energy data and statistics, including energy indicators, energy balances, prices, RD&D budgets, CO2 emissions and forecasts. These can be downloaded for free.

Recommended Actions

The pocketbook provides a useful source of information, besides the detail on 28 EU countries, the more global picture proves to be of interest. Overall, the data can be useful when developing presentations or preparing possible outlines for future developments.
