GEN – 842.00. The European Commission has released the 2017 pocketbook with data up to 2015. The first pocketbooks concentrated on energy figures. Nowadays, socio-economic indicators and the impact of the energy sector on the environment are covered as well.

Contents

The pocketbook has grown to 268 pages. It starts with a global overview that is split into 8 regions: EU 28, Africa, America, Asia, China, Middle East, Russia and rest of the world. It tracks the evolution between 1995 and 2015, followed by the energy and socio-economic indicators for Europe.

Of note is the fourth chapter that goes into the impact of the energy sector on the environment. Compared to previous editions, this is receiving increased attention with a focus on CO2 and GreenHouse Gas emissions.

The figures, both energy- and emission-related, are very interesting, especially when considering the ongoing climate discussions.

A two-page summary for each EU Member States concludes the pocketbook.

Recommended Actions

The pocketbook provides a useful source of information, besides the detail on 28 EU countries the more global picture proves of interest. Overall the data can be useful when developing presentations of preparing possible outlines for future developments.
