Draft implementing act for fabricated metal products manufacturing sector (GEN – 1237.00)

GEN – 1237.00. On 3 May, the European Commission submitted to Member States representatives under the ‘comitology’ procedure a ‘Commission decision on a sectoral reference document on best environmental management practices, environmental performance indicators and benchmarks of excellence for the fabricated metal products manufacturing sector’. Eurovent has requested access to this draft and would receive this by 7 June at latest.

Background

The Commission decision is based on a 266-page study published last year by the Joint Research Centre (JRC)on the best environmental management practice in the fabricated metal product manufacturing sector.

Many products manufactured by members of Eurovent fall within this scope.

The study for JRC makes for interesting reading and includes some useful hints.

Commission Decision

The Commission Decision will serve in future to benchmark the manufacturers compared to the best environmental management practices and environmental performance indicators.

While this is today still vague, if the Commission Decision is adopted, one can expect initial impacts in about five years when more detailed and specifics decisions could become available.

The draft decision and its annex are not yet publicly available. Eurovent has requested a copy and has been informed this would be provided by 7 June, which is after the deadline of 31 May for Member States to comment. At this moment it is not possible to evaluate how the proposal will evolve and if it would be adopted.

When the documents become available these will be added to the Eurovent Extranet.

Recommended actions

The members are recommended to check the contents of the JRC study. While this may not cover the final products, different intermediate steps are addressed.
