Policy Isssue

Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive

Basic information

State of play

The Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive aims to contribute to sustainable production and consumption. It requires the separate collection and proper treatment of WEEE and sets targets for their collection as well as for their recovery and recycling. Air conditioning equipment, dehumidifying equipment, and heat pumps fall within the scope of Electrical and Electronic Equipment.

The Commission is currently carrying out an evaluation of the WEEE Directive, which is expected to provide evidence on whether the Directive is still fit for purpose, to explore any untapped potential for simplification and burden reduction as well as help determine whether a review is needed.
